What began yesterday as a calm debate on keeping space peaceful quickly turned tense as China accused Brazil of hostility, sparking one of DISEC’s sharpest divides yet.
At the Disarmament and International Security Committee, delegates continued discussions on the militarisation of space. The motion before the house, proposed by Singapore, called for the space to be used solely for exploration. Countries supporting the motion included Singapore, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Denmark, and, to a limited extent, China. Opposing the motion were Brazil, Norway, and Finland.
As delegates mingled during informal discussions, diplomatic tensions surfaced. The Chinese delegate stated that China holds opposing views to those of Brazil, Germany, the UAE, the UK, the USA, and Finland. “Brazil is making me out to be the threat, solely because here in China, our weapons are deemed ‘too powerful,’” the representative said.
When approached for comment, the Brazilian delegate expressed surprise. “I never said any of that; that could be fabricated,” they responded, adding that “the tension is one-sided.” As discussions spread across the room, several countries began to take notice of the growing rift between China and Brazil, adding intrigue to DISEC’s ongoing debate over the future of peace in space.
