UNSC

United Nations Security Council

Founded after the Second World War in 1945, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the six principal committees of the United Nations. It is responsible for maintaining international peace and security and approving and changes to the UN Charter while also recommending the admission of new UN members to the General Assembly. The United Nations Security Council is charged with determining an act of aggression or any threats to peace. To maintain peace, the UNSC deploys UN peacekeepers on peacekeeping missions globally to aid in combat situations against insurgents, or militias that pose a threat to the stability of a country of the safety of its people. Adding to the already fast paced and vibrant nature of UNSC, the Permanent Five (P5) members have the ability to veto any decision other than a procedural one.

The UNSC is unique in that it is a hybrid committee with two topics. The first is a set topic debated under standard rules of procedure. The second is a crisis topic revealed during the committee session, debated under crisis rules of procedure. The UNSC is open to delegates of all experience levels. Position papers are not required for this committee, but delegates must submit one in order to be eligible for an award.

Please email any committee-related questions and submit position papers to unsc@vymun.org.
