The U.S. “federal bicameral legislature: the United States Congress” upper house The United States Senate was established by the U.S. Constitution in 1789. The ability to pass federal laws is maintained by the federal legislature congress. At VYMUN the Senate acts as its own sole legislative authority with the absence of the executive branch and lower house.

After a 25-minute unmoderated caucus, delegates rejoin to discuss a motion. Gun laws and immigration topics are being brought up as a few delegates step forth and input their voices. The motion for “final thoughts/solutions” passes.

Guns laws allow 18-year-olds to own pistols and 25-year-olds and older to own open firearms. It has been proposed that the laws should be updated, making the gun-owning age 25 years old. John Kennady argues, “I believe that it should be 25 because they are both weapons.”

It’s been discussed that more restrictions to be brought to attention as certifications, age restrictions, and background checks are brought into discussion. A permit under government authority is necessary for the purchase of guns. Mike Lee says, “We shouldn’t sell guns to people with criminal records and records of past shootings.”

The discussion to pass the legislation to make guns legal for 25-year-olds and above seems to be in complete agreement. John Kennedy proposed to “restrict borders for illegal immigrants coming in possessing weapons. They will have their weapons confiscated through examination.”

Democrats and Republicans have come together to agree on gun laws. As John Kennady puts it, “Our founding fathers would be proud.”

The legislation for raising the age to own firearms with mental health checks to reduce fatalities has been passed.
